Samson Shiploader delivered to Svalbard

Store Norske Spitsbergen Grubekompani, SNSK, has taken delivery of a large Samson Shiploader for their loading facility at Longyearbyen in Svalbard. The shiploader is used to ship very high quality coal from mine no. 7.

SNSK, a company owned by the Norwegian state, has ordered a 55 m long mobile shiploader from UK-based Samson Mechanical Handling.

The new shiploader replaces a several decades old fixed loading belt, which was destroyed a couple of years ago in one of the very heavy storms, which regularly hit on Svalbard, which is located halfway between Norway and the North Pole.

The 55 m long loader, capable of loading vessels up to 60,000 tdw, is provided with a separate 3-way Samson feeder unit, which will be fed by Caterpillar frontloaders.

The shiploader is an autonomous, selfpropelled, rubbertyred, mobile machine.

The unit is designed for parallel, radial and in-line travel allowing easy movement and positioning. Power is provided by the shiploader’s own Caterpillar dieselgenerator.

In addition to the Shiploader, SNSK purchased a separate mobile Samson feeder unit, receiving coal from front loaders and feeding the shiploader.

Samson Materials Handling are since many years recognized world leaders in heavy duty shiploaders, belt feeders and boom stackers.

Several other Samson installations operating in Scandinavia, are typically used for handling feedstuffs, biofuel and gypsum.

Port-Trade ApS represent Samson Materials Handling (previously B&W Mechanical Handling) in the Nordic area since more than 20 years.
